The Wethersfield High School project began with a comprehensive facility study and master plan evaluating the building's infrastructure, capacity, code compliance, and educational program needs. Originally constructed in 1952 with several subsequent additions, the facility underwent a 255,000 square foot "renovate-as-new" transformation alongside a 26,000 square foot addition. Multiple design options were presented to the Board of Education, including new construction and phased renovation scenarios, before a final design was approved through community engagement and a successful referendum.

The renovation addressed educational program requirements, energy conservation, safety, accessibility, and site circulation. The project was designed to LEED Silver equivalent standards, incorporating a photovoltaic array and geothermal system to meet the community's goals for environmentally sensitive design.
