Philip R. Smith Elementary School
Per Phase II of the Town of South Windsor’s Ten-Year Elementary Facilities Master Plan, the original Philip R. Smith School building was razed to make room for a new, K-5 elementary school with an enrollment of 400 students. Construction of the steel-framed, masonry-faced facility began in the Spring of 2019. Students and staff were temporarily relocated offsite until construction was completed in the Summer 2020.

More Information

As with all the firm’s educational projects, meetings with classroom teachers, administrators, and support staff were held to discuss instructional programming needs. The new facility provides better learning environments, meets all current codes, follows new safety expectations, has modern mechanical systems, and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The design concept was heavily concentrated around the idea of bringing nature into the building. Grounding earth tones paired with soothing accent colors were used to create an inviting yet whimsical atmosphere. Salvaged items were incorporated into the new school: school name signage letters above the proscenium; engraved walkway bricks in the new sidewalks; and original monuments and plantings in the courtyard’s memorial Garden.
