As students return for the new academic year, QA+M Architecture proudly spotlights the Bristol Arts and Innovation Magnet School (BAIMS)—a transformative project that blends historic preservation with forward-thinking educational design.
Originally constructed in 1921, this 115,000-square-foot building stood vacant for nearly a decade before being reimagined as a dynamic performing arts magnet school serving grades 6 through 12. QA+M Architecture led the adaptive reuse of this historic structure, preserving its architectural integrity while introducing modern learning environments tailored to the needs of today’s students. At the heart of the design is the restoration of the City of Bristol’s largest performance venue—a 900-seat theater that now serves as a cultural and educational centerpiece for the school and the broader community.
The revitalized BAIMS campus supports a curriculum focused on the arts, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning. Flexible classrooms, collaborative maker spaces, and specialized studios for music, dance, and visual arts were integrated into the historic framework, creating a vibrant and inspiring environment for creative exploration. The design honors the building’s past while positioning it as a hub for future generations of artists, performers, and innovators.
This award-winning project has been recognized for its excellence in both educational design and historic preservation. Honors include the CREW CT Best Specialty – Historic Award, the Connecticut Preservation Merit Award, the CBC Project Team Merit Award, and the AIA Connecticut Elizabeth Mills Brown Historic Restoration Merit Award.
