What is the design and architecture imperative for the future?
I believe at this point, its utterly undeniable that human development has caused major impacts to our climate. As architects, I believe we must do our part to adapt our design ethic to try to at the least, reduce the negative impact of our designs on the climate. Using sustainable materials, locally sourced products, energy conservation in building systems, and many other tools in our kit, we can truly make a big impact. Although many of these options are currently available, lack of governmental requirements and cost constraints limit our current usage, and we must as a global population change this to preserve our planet for future generations.
What piece of advice do you wish you had been given when you were starting out?
Early in my career, I took great pride in trying to come up with exciting designs using the latest materials and finishes, to make every project its absolute best. It did not take very long before I realized the reality of tight budgets, product availability and expedited construction timelines limiting many of these things. At that time, I wish I’d been told to look at every project as a whole and not just for the fancy bits and pieces that may give a nicer cosmetic appearance, but do not end up impacting the overall success of the project. Some of the best projects I have worked on have not been the best because of a cosmetic appearance or design detail, rather they were the best because they realized the clients program goals and some of the detail-oriented things, I thought so important, were trivial in the big picture. A project on a tight budget can still be exciting, meet all a client’s expectations and still be on budget, with creative design and positive thinking.
What’s a question you wish someone would ask you?
Anything and everything! So often, I find that clients shy away from what they may perceive as a “stupid question”, when it’s always been in my view, that in this industry, there is no such thing as a stupid question. I am here as a resource to all my clients and making sure all their questions are answered is always a key to the project’s success and leads to better outcomes. Part of the joy of my career is that I can guide my clients through projects and use my decades of experience to help find the best solution for any scenario.
