Berkowitz II: Affordable Housing Built With Purpose
May 13, 2026

The ribbon has been cut and the units at Berkowitz II are ready to become homes!

As the architects on Berkowitz II, we approached every decision with quality, safety, and affordability at the center. The 28 affordable units range from studios to two-bedroom apartments, each featuring modern finishes, energy efficient windows, and ENERGY STAR appliances. These are not just apartments. They are homes designed to provide stability and dignity to the people who need them most.

What makes Berkowitz II particularly meaningful is the demand that existed before the building was even complete. All 28 units were already allocated prior to construction wrapping up, serving individuals facing financial insecurity or escaping domestic violence. That speaks to both the urgent need for affordable housing in New Britain and across Connecticut, and the importance of projects like this one in addressing it.

To commemorate the occasion, many key figures of the project attended the ribbon cutting ceremony, among them Sharon Castelli, CEO of Chrysalis Center, New Britain Mayor Bobby Sanchez, Connecticut Department of Housing Commissioner Seila Mosquera-Bruno, and Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz. QA+M’s own Kent McCoy and Tom Arcari were there to see their hard work open to the community they designed it for.

Berkowitz II represents more than an expansion of affordable housing in New Britain. It is a continuation of a commitment to design that serves communities. We strive to create buildings that push design standards while genuinely enhancing the areas they are built in. As Mayor Sanchez stated, “Projects like this strengthen neighborhoods, revitalize downtown and remind us that when we invest in people, we invest in the future of the city.”

Congratulations to everyone on the project team who made Berkowitz II a reality. We hope to see affordable housing continue to grow across Connecticut for years to come.
